Authentic Vision – Why does a leader’s success depend on their personal alignment?
This episode looks at the fundamental concept of “authentic vision,” essential for a business leader to give their organization drive and direction. Far from being a simple numerical target, authentic vision is the expression of the leader’s deep personal fulfillment, in resonance with a form of ecology and alignment.
Authenticity as an Engine of Creation
Eve explains the need to add the word “authentic” to vision, to distinguish it from superficial or inauthentic visions. A vision is authentic when it is carried by something that truly resonates within the leader.
The entrepreneur who succeeds carries something that is authentically true. If they are not in tune with what resonates within them, they risk losing their drive and even becoming ill.
The Challenge of Transmission and the Leader’s Role
Once the personal vision is established, the big challenge is transmitting it to the collective. The guests note that while enthusiasm initially helps mobilize the team, you have to learn to manage the gap: not all employees will share the same “drive” as the founder.
It is crucial for the leader to be very clear about their vision by asking whether employees want to live it. Although the vision itself is often non-negotiable in its fundamentals, it must be questioned, reworked and adjusted every year based on the ups and downs of the market and the team (for example, moving from a pioneering phase to a consolidation phase).
The Societal Evolution of Vision
The episode highlights a major shift: the primacy of the boss’s personality, often seen as caricatural today, has given way to a quest for a more societal vision and the company’s purpose. Individual personality tends to be downplayed.
The guests offer new directions for an ecological and social vision of the living:
- Ensuring that the company and its employees are healthy.
- Making visible the people who work in invisible professions (such as in the cleaning or security sectors).
- Creating a company that solves the equation of interaction between seniors (who let go of dogmatism) and young people (who develop listening skills while keeping their spontaneity).
Exemplarity vs. Spontaneity
The discussion ends on the tension between exemplarity (transmission by example, sought by mentors) and spontaneity (born from the social revolutions of the 1970s). Spontaneity without safeguards can lead to carelessness, while exemplarity alone can become an unreachable model. The leader must combine both to create richness in human interaction.
