The Adaptation Coefficient

The Adaptation Coefficient measures an individual’s or an organization’s capacity to effectively modify their behaviors, cognitions and emotions in response to environmental changes, while maintaining or improving their performance and well-being.

The world has changed, our evaluation criteria haven’t.

For decades, we worshipped the Intelligence Quotient as the gold standard of human capacity. Then came the Emotional Quotient, finally recognizing that our relational intelligence mattered just as much as our ability to solve equations.

But today, in 2025, as we navigate between climate crises, technological upheaval, geopolitical reconfigurations and permanent economic shifts, one question stands out: what if the most vital skill were neither our IQ nor our EQ, but our capacity to adapt?

Organizational adaptation: from survival to excellence

Darwin had sensed it: “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.”

What was true for species has become true for our organizations. The companies that thrive today are not necessarily the biggest, the best-funded or the most innovative. They are the ones that know how to pivot quickly, learn collectively from their mistakes, and turn uncertainty into opportunity.

Yet we continue to recruit based on résumés, promote based on technical expertise, and value stability over plasticity. We measure everything – revenue, productivity, engagement – except this fundamental capacity to adapt.

Isn’t it time to change that?

What Is the Adaptation Coefficient (AC)?

Unlike IQ, which is relatively stable, the AC is a skill that develops, is cultivated, is trained. That’s good news: we can all become more adaptable.

The 4 dimensions of organizational AC

The organizational Adaptation Coefficient rests on four fundamental dimensions, inspired by work on Individual Adaptability Theory (I-ADAPT) developed by Ployhart & Bliese in 2006, and research on Adaptive Capacity in organizations:

  • 🧠 Cognitive Dimension: The organization’s ability to learn quickly, to consider multiple perspectives, to unlearn what no longer works, and to develop collective intelligence

  • 🎯 Behavioral Dimension: The agility to experiment, to abandon obsolete habits, to adjust practices according to context, and to persevere despite obstacles

  • 💗 Emotional Dimension: Collective resilience, managing the stress linked to change, the ability to bounce back after failure, and to maintain realistic optimism

  • 🤝 Social Dimension: Relational adaptation, collaboration in changing configurations, adjusted communication, and understanding of evolving needs

Why measure adaptability now?

The data demonstrates the crucial importance of organizational adaptability. According to LinkedIn’s Global Talent Trends 2019 report, 91% of HR leaders consider adaptability skills critical to future success.

McKinsey’s research on organizational agility reveals that agile companies (combining speed of adaptation with organizational stability) show 30% higher operating profitability than companies that fail to adapt quickly (McKinsey, study on the agile organization, 2016).

But beyond the statistics, there is a daily reality: 5-year plans no longer make sense. The COVID-19 pandemic reminded us of this brutally. The acceleration of generative artificial intelligence confirms it. Geopolitical tensions underscore it.

In this context of permanent uncertainty, adaptability is no longer a “nice to have.” It is a condition for survival and prosperity for any organization.

What we still don’t know about adaptable organizations

Here’s where things get interesting: while we know organizational adaptability is crucial, we don’t yet know precisely what makes an organization truly adaptable.

  • What are the management practices of leaders who build agile collectives?

  • What rituals foster continuous learning and cognitive flexibility?

  • How do you create an environment where failure becomes a lever for evolution rather than a brake?

  • Are there invariants, recurring patterns in organizations that excel at adapting to change?

  • How can we objectively assess a company’s Adaptation Coefficient?

This is precisely what I want to find out.

Collective research on organizational adaptability

I am today launching a qualitative study to model the practices of entrepreneurs who build lasting, high-performing and adaptable collectives. This approach is in line with the values of inclusion and collaboration carried by 1Clusif.

My action-research approach:

  • In-depth interviews (60 minutes) with entrepreneurs from different sectors

  • An analysis grid structured around the 4 dimensions of organizational AC

  • A podcast-format publication to share learnings with the community

  • A summary of the identified invariants reserved for study participants

The goal: to create a common good, a shared knowledge base on what really works to develop organizational adaptability and build resilient organizations.

No “success washing”: authenticity above all

This research on the Adaptation Coefficient is not a collection of polished success stories. I am looking for authenticity and pragmatism:

  • What really works in managing change?

  • What managerial mistakes should not be repeated?

  • What doubts persist among leaders?

  • Where are the unresolved tensions in building adaptable collectives?

Because adaptability is not built in the varnish of marketed case studies. It is forged in overcome crises, painful pivots, owned failures and collective victories.
